Prayer Pointersused as intercessions during the family service on Sunday 13th January 2008
Thumb - Thumbs up.
Give thanks to God.
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the people; I will sing your praises
among the nations. For your mercy is greater than the heavens, and your
faithfulness reaches the clouds. (Psalm 108 v 3-4)
Index finger - pointing the way.
Pray for guidance in the journey of faith.
Almighty and everlasting God,
we thank you that you have brought us safely
to the beginning of this day.
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger,
order us in all our doings
and guide us to do always what is righteous in your sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Common Worship, Morning Prayer)
Middle finger - the tallest.
Pray for those in positions of authority.
Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things
in your beloved Son, the King of all:
govern the hearts and minds of those in authority
and bring the families of the nations,
divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin,
to be subject to his just and gentle rule. Amen
(Collect, 3 before Advent)
Fourth finger - the Ring finger.
Pray for those whom you love.
Father, from whom every family receives its true name,
I pray for all the members of my family and all my friends:
for those who are growing up,
that they may increase in wisdom and love;
for those facing changes, that they may meet them with hope;
for those who are weak, that they may find strength;
for those with heavy burdens, that they may carry them lightly,
for those who are old and frail, that they may grow in faith.
I ask this is the name of Jesus, my friend and my brother. Amen
(More Everyday Prayers)
Little finger - the weakest.
Pray for those in need.
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who wake, or watch or weep this night or
day, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, give
rest to the weary, sustain the dying, calm the suffering, and pity the
distressed; all for your love's sake, O Christ our Redeemer. Amen
(St. Augustine)

During the Autumn of 2007, the Anglican senior adventurers explored different ways of praying using ideas taken from the book Exploring Prayer by Sue Mayfield. Their interpretation of her Five-finger prayer exercise formed the basis of the intercessions at the Family Service in January 2008. |
